Usually the time your home will encounter a plumbing emergency is when you are the least prepared. They can happen in the middle of the night or while you are on your way home from work. The majority of homeowners simply are not prepared in the event that an emergency occurs, and many times some simple education can go a long way in protecting some of your belongings from being completely destroyed. Your home has many different areas that have water running through pipes and fixtures. From the bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, and even the garage, your home has a maze of pipes running basically all over it. Here are some tips to help you better cope with that potential plumbing emergency that will happen at the worst possible time.

The first thing that you should do is locate the phone number of a few plumbers in your town. The reason that you want more than one is because in the unlikely event one of them is unavailable, you will need to get someone there quickly. Find the telephone numbers of a couple plumbers and call them to see if they over 24 hour emergency service. Take two numbers of local plumbers who have service through the night and hang the numbers on your refrigerator. The last thing you need to be doing during an emergency is scrambling around wasting valuable time looking for a plumbers telephone number.

The next thing you must do is locate the shut off valves for every item in your home that has water running to it. Toilets, sinks, and washing machines all have turn off valves that can immediately cut off the flow of water in the even that one of those items breaks and begins shooting water everywhere. This goes for the hot water heater that usually in the garage, it will have a shut off vale near it as well.

Locate your water meter, and see if the main shut off valve is in that area. If not you may have to look around the perimeter of the house to find it. This is where you can turn off all the water coming into the home to stop the leak and protect all of your furnishings until the professionals arrive.
